SAB proudly celebrates the 30th anniversary of the SAB Sports Journalist of the Year Awards in 2010.
The SAB Sports Journalist of the Year Awards were conceived by former SAB marketing director Peter Savory, who, as a former newspaperman, thought there should be a competition which recognised the achievements of sports writers. SAB and sports journalists have always had a “partners-in-news” relationship. Until these awards, there was no tangible recognition of the art of sports writing and no encouragement for development.
Since its inception, the competition has grown to become the most prestigious and respected award for sports journalists in South Africa. Initially the awards were established for newspaper writers only but the rapid strides made by television and radio in the sporting arena ensured that there were soon to be categories for the electronic media as well.
The aim of the awards is to reinforce the importance of the media’s role in South Africa’s sporting development and to recognise and reward talent across all sporting media disciplines.
The 30th SAB Sports Journalist of the Year Awards is for work produced between 1 May 2009 and 31 July 2010. Entries close on 2 August 2010.
The awards will take place on Monday, 6 September 2010.
