The SAB Sports Journalist Of The Year - Winner takes home R25 000

The overall winner is chosen from the following three categories:

1. Print and Internet winner (R20 000)
The winner is chosen from the finalist/s in the following categories:

  • Sports feature writer of the year – for sports features and in-depth interviews;
  • Sports columnist of the year – for regular columnists;
  • Sports event/live match reporter of the year – for live match or event reporting under deadline pressure, and includes breaking sports news;
  • Sports photographer of the year – photographs must have been published either in print or on the Internet; and
  • Sports new media contributor – for regular internet contributors, must be exclusive to the internet and not a print contribution that has made it to the internet.


2. Radio winner (R20 000)
The winner is chosen from the finalist/s in the following categories:

  • Sports commentator of the year – live event commentary;
  • Producers of sports programmes of the year;
  • Sports presenter of the year – in-studio presenting of live sport or magazine programmes;
  • Sports news reporter of the year – the accent here is on news; and
  • Sports insert of the year – for consistent quality work.


3. Television winner (R20 000)
The winner is chosen from the finalist/s in the following categories:

  • Sports programme of the year – aimed at executive producers and producers;
  • Best live outside broadcast production of the year – aimed at executive producers and producers;
  • Sports commentator of the year – live match commentary;
  • Sports presenter/analyst of the year – aimed at on-camera talent;
  • Sports news reporter of the year - the accent here is on news and breaking stories; and
  • Sports insert of the year – for consistent quality work.


Best Newcomer (R5 000)
The winner is chosen from the finalist/s in the following categories:

  • Print and Internet Newcomer – awarded to a newcomer in the industry (less than two years)
  • Radio Newcomer – awarded to a newcomer in the industry (less than two years)
  • Television Newcomer – awarded to a newcomer in the industry (less than two years)


Media Award (no monetary prize)
Most media-friendly sports personality of the year – voted for by the sports media.
